It’s Cool to be Strange: On Messiness, Bon Iver, and Blurring the Boundaries. Here in photographer, Eau Claire, Wisconsin we have a hero: Justin Vernon, the Grammy award-winning musician of Bon Iver fame. I first heard his name a year or so following the 2007 release of essay resolution for new “For Emma, Forever Ago,” a haunting album made all the better by the haunting story attached to it. According to legend, after a rough stint in North Carolina, a down-and-out Vernon left his broken band, his broken heart, and photographer essays, his bout of mononucleosis, and returned north to Wisconsin. Upon his return, he grabbed his recording equipment, then holed up in his family’s cabin, emerging three months later with what would soon be deemed a critically-acclaimed album. This oft-fetishized story is of interest to artists and musicians alike due to our shared question: What in the hell happened in admission, that cabin during those three solitary months? Interviews with Vernon offer a bit of insight (some writing, some strumming, some reruns of Northern Exposure ), but I’ve always wanted to essays, know the real story. What he saw when he looked into the dark of Dunn County as the next layer of snow draped down. And what he felt as those first notes began to hit their marks, when he discovered that his now famous falsetto enhanced everything. Book Report On Condi! As Vernon concluded his southern stint and essays, returned north, I headed in essay on my year, the opposite direction, leaving the Midwest to photographer, enroll in the graduate writing program at cornell college essay the University of Alabama. Photographer! There, I endured no broken bands, no broken hearts, no mononucleosis—which admittedly, left a budding nonfiction writer such as myself with few stories worth putting to contest, the page.

Yet in the spring of 2010 things changed. In my final semester, I took a class from photographer, visiting nonfiction writer Dinty W. Moore. While driving us to a local barbecue joint, Dreamland , for lunch one day, I began asking him about the limits of contest nonfiction. How far can you bend an essay before you break it? At what point does a fact become a fiction? That afternoon, over banana pudding and ribs, Blurring the Boundaries was born. Essays! For the next two years, I’d serve as the how to write phd thesis, project’s editor, asking contributors to share work that explored “the borderlands between genre.” Additionally, I asked writers to provide a behind-the-scenes “mini-essay” on their writing process for their included work.

I wanted readers to essays, know what happened when nobody was looking. How To Write Phd Thesis! Nearly six years removed from that fateful lunch—and as we approach the four-year anniversary of the book’s publication—it’s clear to photographer essays, me now that my interest in “what-happens-when-nobody’s-looking” was motivated by the same curiosity that has kept me wondering what occurred in that cabin when Justin Vernon found his voice. How To Write! Of course, the essays, legend is always more interesting than the truth, but the truth can often prove more helpful. In their “mini-essays,” the Blurring the Boundaries contributors confirmed for me that writing—like all art—is a terribly messy process. The only part worth seeing is the final product, though an unflinching glimpse in the messy middle is cornell essay admission, where we artists stand to learn the most. I’d always hoped that Blurring the Boundaries might provide that unflinching glimpse. Photographer Essays! I wanted to demystify the notion that great art comes in the form of a lightning bolt. I wanted to highlight, too, that even the writers we admire most spend a lot of time rolling around in the muck. I suppose what I was truly after was an honest portrayal of the difficulties of making art.

Sure, it’s nice to imagine Justin Vernon’s silhouette on phd thesis the midnight snow as his muse whispered all the right notes. But I imagine it wasn’t as lovely as all that. Sometimes we create our best work—as I do—while donning a bathrobe in a basement beside a furnace. It’s not glamorous; no one ever said it would be. Beyond all this, I also intended for Blurring the Boundaries to showcase the value in the experiment, especially when the photographer essays, experiment has the potential to fail. I wanted to commend the risk-taking, provide a space where it was okay for how to write a swot, writers to try something uncomfortable and untested. As a result, some of the anthology’s essays feel unfamiliar to readers, and to my mind, this unfamiliarity is proof of essays their success. If one goal of the anthology was to provide an “exploration to the fringes of book report on condi nonfiction” (as the subtitle notes), then the fringe should feel unfamiliar. That’s what makes it a fringe.

A few weeks back, Justin Vernon released his latest album, “22, A Million.” It’s nothing like the one that came before. Pitchfork described it as “strange and essays, experimental” while Rolling Stones added that it sounded “like the work of an artist starting over from scratch.” Don’t be fooled; these are virtues, and part of the reason the album’s been deemed a “sonic masterpiece” as well. Last weekend, I ran into Justin Vernon while washing our hands in a bathroom. I played it cool, tried to act as if I wasn’t washing my hands alongside a musician I deeply admire. We shared some small talk—I mentioned that my creative writing students would be analyzing his lyrics during our poetry unit—and he thanked me. But of course, I wanted to thank him.

Not only for giving us the college, myth of the man in photographer essays, the cabin who made music, but for subverting that myth as well. Write A Swot! And for releasing a new album fully stripped of the very things that made him famous, for having the courage to reinvent a wheel rather than retread the one that worked so well. “Some use technology as a tool of correction,” the New York Times wrote, “Mr. Vernon and his collaborators use it as a trigger for forced errors…” Indeed, it’s an album that revels in its “messiness.” One that, at least for me, confirms that it’s okay to be “strange and experimental”, that it’s acceptable to start from scratch. The album reminds me, too, that though it’s always a risk to take a risk, it’s a risk not to take one, too. My hope is photographer, that Blurring the write, Boundaries might affirm the same message. To remind readers and writers of a simple truth: that art isn’t always easy or pretty or clean, but that’s what makes it art. B.J. Hollars is the photographer, author of several books, most recently From the Mouths of Dogs , as well as a collection of essays, This Is Only A Test . In February, Flock Together: A Love Affair With Extinct Birds will be published by admission, the University of essays Nebraska Press. Hollars serves as a mentor for Creative Nonfiction and book report, a contributing blogger for Brain, Child . Finish Work: The Twenty-Year Memoir.

Growing up, I delivered newspapers after school. Every day, for some ten years. Photographer Essays! And forty years later, I can still remember the front stoops and names of many of those customers. Some nights I’ll even dream about contest that paper route. One spring afternoon, though, stands out above all the rest. Photographer Essays! I was biking down Jeanette Drive with my usual back rack piled high with Newsday when I came upon a man repairing a customer’s front brick steps.

Unable to reach the mailbox, I set the paper down before the chromakey essay, garage door, then paused to watch him work—his flicked troweling of cement, his gentle tamping of the bricks, his repositioning of string line . . . the thickness of his wrists, the worn knee pads wrapped round his dungarees. He worked with such precision and control, such utter grace. Not an ounce of fat on any of his movements. I could tell he knew exactly what he was doing, and how to do it. Maybe even the why . I stood there for a good half hour, just watching him work. And I remember thinking if I could ever do something that well, anything really, I’d be a happy person.

This month, I’m publishing my memoir. Or, finally publishing, I should say, since it’s been twenty years in the making. Why so long, you ask? Questions of perfectionism, procrastination? Sure, in part. Admittedly I’m a writer who works and builds things slowly, who lives slowly. In great part, that’s what Schoolhouse: Lessons on photographer essays Love Landscape concerns—a classic coming of age tale about young love and enduring landscapes, about life lessons that came slow-learned and hard-earned. A trail many memoirs traverse. Then again, some of phd thesis us move slower than others. “Stumbling toward hindsight,” I call it in essays, the book.

Still, 20 years?! How could that be? How does one sustain it? I could try to claim extenuating circumstances. Other projects that took priority, like earning a wage, raising a child. But all writers contend with such conflicting responsibilities, if we’re lucky. After all, it’s what you build daily in life that truly matters. And, admittedly, I did not toil away at this manuscript day-in day-out for twenty solid years. There were many days when anything seemed easier than the heavy lifting, the utter tedium of showing up at how to the desk to write again. Many years when anything seemed preferable to photographer essays, facing the material of my life.

Many drafts wherein I couldn’t even write the full name of chromakey essay a key character—using an initial was all I could muster. Photographer! Still, I stumbled on. Chromakey Essay! Six years into the project I felt it was finished. Next followed the dance of hubris—my partnering with a NYC agent, the flood of publisher submissions, the trickle of rejection letters that were all kind and complimentary, but my memoir (set primarily on a remote Iowa hillside) was too quiet and removed for a wider readership. For a few months I believed that. Why should anyone care about my little schoolhouse story, my belly button lint?

Deep inside, however, I knew the issue wasn’t the remoteness of the book’s location, but of its rendering. For a memoir, it wasn’t as forthcoming and vulnerable as it needed to be. It wasn’t done yet. Wasn’t plumb, or true. And so I set aside the manuscript on a high shelf. For a good decade the photographer essays, box gathered dust. From time to essay on my for new year, time I’d scribble something on scraps of paper and slip them between its cardboard flaps. Meanwhile, I wrote other tales. Fictions, filmscripts, postcards. I got married and became a parent.

I pushed strollers and park swings. Stacked Legos on the floor, words across a page. Photographer! And then a funny thing happened. Book! Time moved on. Somehow I was older.

Sometimes, all that’s needed is the photographer, practice of cornell college essay years. Time, not only for a writer, but for a person to grow into one’s words. Photographer! To open a box. The last drafts of Schoolhouse came in their due time. How To! It’s still a quiet book, built brick by brick, I guess. Like Goethe once wrote, “Do not hurry; do not rest.” In retrospect, I suspect the book got done as quickly as it could. Essays! I’m fairly pleased with its level of craft, but more so with the solidness of cornell college essay its intents. I feel the essays, story now offers a reader what I’d always hoped it could. Plus, I’m happy it’s found a home with a quiet independent Iowa press, located just down the resolution for new, road from where the schoolhouse once stood. Photographer! If I could, I’d deliver one to each of your doorsteps. Chromakey Essay! I have no doubts that bricklayer doesn’t remember me, or that stairway he built on photographer essays Jeanette Drive.

It was just one of many he completed. In the end, it’s the work that matters, not the project. Each row of chromakey essay bricks or sentences, carefully placed. Photographer Essays! A structure to write, make true. Writing, too, is a little like a stairway. Always another plateau to climb.

Writing, an ongoing apprenticeship. We scribblers and stumblers, journeymen. And that’s OK. There’s always more work to be done. Marc Nieson is essays, a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and NYU Film School. His background includes children’s theatre, cattle chores, and a season with a one-ring circus.

His memoir, Schoolhouse: Lessons on Love Landscape is just released from Ice Cube Press. He#8217;s won a Raymond Carver Short Story Award, Pushcart Prize nominations, and been noted in Best American Essays . He teaches at Chatham University, edits fiction for how to a swot, The Fourth River , and essays, is at work on cornell college admission a new novel, Houdini#8217;s Heirs . You Put Together a Book: How Does That Make You Feel? An Interview with the Anthology’s Editor, Sherry Amatenstein. By Estelle Erasmus. I have a history with Sherry Amatenstein, the editor of How Does That Make You Feel? Confessions from Both Sides of the Therapy Couch , and photographer, a therapist herself . We were both magazine editor-in-chiefs at concurrent times in book report on condi, the mid to late 1990s with competitive publications. In the midst of this cut-throat competition, we founded a friendship, confounding our publishers. Photographer! After I dropped out of the publishing scene to get married and have my daughter in midlife, after a long struggle with infertility, Sherry and I reconnected. That’s when I learned that she was putting together an anthology with the unique viewpoint of therapy from write phd thesis, both sides of the couch (therapists and patients). Anthologies are tricky.

I have known people who have gotten involved in less than stellar publications, with less than adept editing and curating. I knew for photographer, sure that with Sherry at the helm I wouldn’t be. I had a long buried secret in my past, that I’d told to a handful of people (including my own therapist of many years), but I knew that in Sherry’s capable hands, the write a swot, story would not be made into click bait. Thus, along with 33 other widely published writers, such as Patti Davis, Anna March, Susan Shapiro, Janice Eidus, Pamela Rafalow Grossman, Amy Klein, and therapists/writers like Juli Fragra, Jean Kim, and Jessica Zucker, I entrusted my story to Sherry. I wrote about the sex-talking therapist I had sessions with as a teen in an essay I titled, #8220;Therapy Undercover: Satin Shirts and Sex Talk.#8221; There was a great early review of Sherry’s book in the Washington Post the photographer essays, other day and in Tablet. I spoke with Sherry to essay, dish the therapy dirt. Q: How did you come up with the idea for the book? A: An early ambition of photographer mine was to be a therapist. As a child of Holocaust survivors I was immersed in pain.

I thought of becoming a therapist, but winded up going into publishing instead. Then I volunteered at a suicide hotline, and at Ground Zero Food Service after 9/11. When I became a therapist in midlife, it was the culmination of essay resolution for new year a dream, because I had wanted to do it for so long. Frankly, becoming a therapist has been very hard work, but it has helped me to accept myself more. We are all crazy and essays, neurotic.

Being a writer and being a therapist are very similar. It involves being curious about other people, listening and writing. I felt that the therapist is this blank screen, and essay on my resolution for new year, then your patient projects on to you what they want to project. There is photographer, this profound exchange in the room, a compelling connection, but when you leave after 50 minutes, it’s over. I put together the book, because in the age of the Internet, a therapist can’t be just that blank screen any more. I decided I wanted to demystify the process and obliterate the boundaries for people who are in therapy as well as therapists. People idolize therapists and how to write, treat them in ways that are not good for them. I wanted to photographer essays, illuminate the relationships from both sides. How To Write! I also did the essays, book to preserve therapist’s sanity.

We have to take care of ourselves. It’s like you are never off duty. I mean, I sometimes get calls from patients who are suicidal. Cornell College Essay Admission! You need to set boundaries, and be there for patients as well. Q: What did you look for in contributors? A: Everyone had to be a professional writer.

For a lot of people it was like a therapy session writing these pieces, because some of photographer essays them had difficulty going to essay for new year, such a deep, dark place. Your piece was really good right off the get go. I have to say I was like a shark. Photographer Essays! Whenever I saw anyone had any therapy related stories, I pounced. I also met writers I loved at a swot events and invited them to essays, submit.

Once I had the deal with Seal Press, it became even easier to get people to cornell admission, contribute. Q: How did you approach the essays from the therapists? A: It was harder to get therapists who were good writers. Some very well known therapists dropped out of the book at the eleventh hour, because they were worried about exposing themselves. I was looking for a wide range of voices and for them to reveal the truth about their doubts, fears and processes. Jean Kim, talked about her own therapy, Jenine Holmes wrote about how black people don’t go to therapy, Megan Devine wrote about feeling “imposter syndrome” as a therapist, Nina Gaby’s piece talks about boundaries between therapist and patient. The therapists are showing that they are real people and essays, don’t need to be placed on pedestals. I had concerns about displaying their essays, but I thought it was important. Report On Condi! My point of view is you can’t do this work without caring about the people. Q: Do your patients know about the book? A: I’ve been telling my patients about it, although I’m a little nervous about it.

I’m still me, but I wanted to be revealing in a way that didn’t hurt my patients. I run groups for writers with self esteem issues. Most knew I’ve published other books in the past, but I don’t mind if they don’t buy my book. A: Right now, I’m not looking into doing another book. After this experience, maybe I’ll dive further into my therapy. Photographer! Estelle Erasmus is a widely published journalist, writing coach and former magazine editor-in-chief. Sherry Amatenstein , LCSW, is a NYC-based therapist and author of photographer The QA Dating Book, Love Lessons From Bad Breakups, and The Complete Marriage Counselor. Two recently released creative nonfiction anthologies, Creating Nonfiction: Twenty Essays and Interviews with the book report, Writers (Excelsior Editions, 2016) and I’ll Tell You Mine: Thirty Years of photographer Essays from the Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program (University of Chicago Press, 2015) offer a stunning array of contemporary creative nonfiction writing, and coincidentally both offer candid interviews with the writers about inspirations, challenges faced, and decisions to write phd thesis, fully realize these works. Such frank conversations can lead to teachable moments in the classroom. In this two-part blog post, Jeanette Luise Eberhardy and Debbie Hagan not only examine these anthologies, but also lessons to be learned. Part One By Jeanette Luise Eberhardy. When I teach creative nonfiction writing to art students, they are most interested in two skills: omission and perhapsing. The skill of omission, examined by John McPhee in an essay in photographer, the New Yorker (2015), asks the write, writer to carefully consider what details are excluded. Art students relate omission to their understanding of essays negative space—that space on the page that remains after a mark is made. They recognize that marks or thoughts that are omitted may reveal more about the messy business of living.

The skill perhapsing also considers what is missing. Perhapsing, introduced by Lisa Knopp in book, a craft essay in Brevity (2009), gives the photographer essays, writer a way to wonder about a swot circumstances in a nonfiction narrative without making up facts. The word perhaps (or other phrases such as could have been or may have been ), signals to readers that the photographer, writer has left the realm of direct observation or documented research. Omission and perhapsing allow the essay resolution for new year, writer and reader to photographer, explore the cornell college essay admission, space between the known and the unknown in the context of the photographer essays, ever-evolving self. How To! A new book of essays considers the mysterious nature of the vast territory between the known and the unknown: Creating Nonfiction: Twenty Essays and Interviews with the Writers , edited by Jen Hirt and essays, Erin Murphy. In this anthology, the layers of experience are represented in a wide variety of forms including segmented and lyric essays, blog posts and how to write, personal narratives, graphic essays, as well as the definition essay. Here I will focus on essays that experiment with using omission and perhapsing to essays, open up writing and to enlist readers’ participation in report, this conversation on celebrating life. The complicated work of examining the photographer essays, impact of omission is addressed by writer Faith Adiele in her definition essay, “How to book on condi, Make Sense of the Postcolonial Nation-State: A Definition Essay Using Material Lifted Almost Entirely from the photographer essays, Internet as Annotated by the Author, Herself a Nigerian American.” Adiele uses material from the internet to examine instances of “cultural appropriation and stolen narratives” on Nigeria.

Adiele, born to a Nigerian father and write, a Nordic-American mother, assesses what is essays, omitted from the definitions of Nigeria by striking a line through the original internet text (and leaving it in her essay). By making explicit the implicit biases, she invites the reader to actively participate in a conversation on the extent of chromakey essay inaccurate information about photographer Nigeria. She creates a more truthful story about Nigeria to preserve diversity with respect for on my resolution year, the generations that came before her as well the generations that will follow her. In the essay “Kestrel Avenue,” writer Cheryl Strayed also explores the relationship between the photographer, skill of contest omission and the on-going nature of essays shifting perceptions. Strayed compares a newspaper article on essay a bank robbery she wrote at age eighteen with this essay written twenty-eight years later. The earlier newspaper report left out the fact that her family knew the bank robber. Her eighteen–year–old self did not want to admit this knowledge. In the interview following her essay, Strayed identifies the tension between knowing and refusing to know. We know that at the heart of any “refusing to know” is the fear of loss. A few years before the photographer essays, incident, Strayed’s family provided shelter to the bank robber when he was passing through town.

What was the loss Strayed did not want to face? Readers may wonder and consider their own peculiar fears around loss and withholding knowledge. The students that I teach are most interested in Strayed’s last question in the interview: “What role does omission play in cornell college, truth-telling?” Jeanette Luise Eberhardy. The skill of perhapsing also plays an important role in transforming truth into art. In “The Third Step,” Sheryl St. Germain begins her essay on photographer essays doubt by essay on my for new, perhapsing what sort of day it was when her friend’s son was killed on his motorcycle. “A sunny day? Blue skies? Trees budding?

First fragile flowers in bloom?” This particular use of perhapsing introduces the photographer essays, humble feeling of not knowing while the writer participates in a funeral service in a church where she no longer believes its creed. Perhapsing helps to make visible her struggle with conflicting needs: wanting to believe in something, showing compassion for chromakey essay, the dead son, respecting the photographer essays, grieving family, and acting with integrity with herself. Perhapsing opens the space to reflect on how to these conflicting needs. This may be why students acknowledge the impact of perhapsing more than any other skill they learn during my creative nonfiction writing courses. More subtle forms of perhapsing are shown in the space between word and photographer, images in Kristen Radtke’s graphic essay “The City of the Century” where a young woman reflects on photos she and her friends stole from an admission abandoned cathedral. Through research on the internet, the main character discovers the photos are from a memorial service for a twenty-four-year-old urban explorer who was run over while trying to take pictures of an essays oncoming train. Drawn images of ruins of the church, railroad tracks, and the young woman who discovered the photos accompany this text: “I stare at the pictures for a long time to draw conclusions that are not mine to draw.” The space between the panels may prolong the opening of readers’ perceptions and how to write phd thesis, suspend simplistic notions they might entertain about what it means to feel vulnerable in photographer, this moment. Together images, words, and the space between panels create an artistic bridge that helps the reader imagine the many layers of this experience. In the interview after the college admission, essay, Radtke explains that image, word, and space play off each other and express the feeling that “we don’t always get things right,” which can lead to photographer essays, a “much richer dialogue.” Perhapsing in all its forms offers the opportunity to deepen this dialogue in a more authentic way. And isn’t this what the writer hopes for—a genuine conversation with the reader? The use of space is also important in the segmented essays in this collection.

For example, in Dinty W. Moore’s essay “Tooth and a swot, Claw,” compassion is explored in many forms: a neighbor who tenaciously controls the essays, growth of dandelions in her grass (using a sewing scissors) while she cares for her husband who had a massive stroke a few years earlier; the writer’s interest in chromakey essay, growing Italian dandelions; the rugged nature of this plant with its important healing properties. The space between each segment in Moore’s essay leaves room for reflection and permits readers to make their own meaning. While I teach a variety of photographer skills in chromakey essay, creative nonfiction writing—using evocative objects for central images, creating mind maps to photographer essays, exercise the skill of on my resolution year conceptual blending, experimenting with sequencing information, and building scenes with dialogue—students have taught me that omission and perhapsing help them to photographer essays, realize and remember this truth: we see more than we understand. At the how to phd thesis, end of one semester, a student said, “Now I can look for the skills and techniques in essays, other writing. I especially look for chromakey essay, perhapsing to see what it brings to a piece.

I like seeing what was added and imagining what was left out.” Creating Nonfiction: Twenty Essays and Interviews with Writers offers new opportunities to photographer essays, consider the way we hold conversations with our experiences and with our readers.

Unfortunately, besides an automated email reply, you hear absolutely nothing back. You feel crushed — you think some hiring manager on the other end actually read through the essays entirety of your resume and write phd thesis concluded that you weren’t qualified for the job.

This resume reading software allows these companies to cornell college, to automate, streamline, and photographer essays manage the hiring process.

Why are companies allowing robots to how to write a swot, make human resource decisions? Going through resumes to screen applicants is tedious work. But the ATS speeds up this process by identifying candidates whose resumes contain key experiences and skill sets that match the qualifications employers are seeking. According to a popular study conducted by search services provider Preptel, as many as 75% of the candidates don’t make it past the ATS screening. It may seem brutal, but this screening process does the job of whittling down a cumbersome applicant pool into just a handful of applicants that the human hiring managers can review more closely. Here’s the takeaway for living in the age of resume reading robots — a well-crafted, ATS friendly resume is absolutely critical to a successful job hunt. Here’s the takeaway for living in the age of resume reading robots — a well-crafted, ATS friendly resume is absolutely critical to a successful job hunt. Qualified candidates that fail to make an ATS friendly resume will get rejected, period.

Here are 4 reasons that even the most qualified candidates can fail to After combing the web and consulting some of photographer, our in-house experts at Resume Genius, we zero in on the most common reasons why resumes of even the most qualified candidates fail to pass screening. Reason #1: The ATS can’t actually process your resume. Warning: The ATS will fail to read your artistic additions to your resume . Although a human hiring manager might appreciate a little flair, the essay for new year resume robot will simply incinerate your resume without a second thought. It would be a shame for essays your resume to get screen out because the ATS is unable to read it. Essay On My Resolution For New Year. Basic rule of thumb: keep your fonts and formatting simple. Scrap inventive layouts, graphics, or artifacts that affect the readability of your resume. Sometimes the ATS will use a built-in optical character recognition (OCR) software to processes your digital resume. It scans your file, converts it into a text format, then extracts your information and experiences from there. Photographer Essays. While the ATS is getting better at how to write phd thesis reading PDF files, it’s still safer to feed the system a Word or Text file. Do away with any adjusted spacing, newsletter formatting, lines.

Go with the clean, standard fonts like Arial, Verdana, and Times New Roman. Scrap inventive layouts, graphics, or artifacts that affect the readability of your resume. Reason #2: The ATS doesn’t recognize the headings you used. Applicant Tracking System software is built to sort your experiences based on photographer essays, the resume’s section headings. Admission. If you’ve written a different heading than normal — say “Major Abilities” instead of “Skills,” it will skip over that section if it is unable to photographer, determine what your heading stands for, the CIO reports. People like to how to, get creative with headings, thinking that it will help their resume stand out.

Unfortunately, unconventional headings can actually hurt it. Help the software do its job. Use the standard headings “Work Experience”, “Skills”, “Publications” so you don’t stand the risk of the resume bot placing your qualifications under the wrong categories, or misreading your headings altogether. Reason #3: Your resume lacks targeted keywords. By now, you’ve formatted your resume properly, and used normal headings. Here’s the meat of how an ATS actually reads your resume. It’s looking for targeted keywords. First, the hiring manager will input certain keywords and photographer key phrases into the software, each relevant to the role they need filled. For example, an software company hiring manager might use these keywords:

Next, the ATS software will read through each resume, and essay on my determine whether the it has enough keywords and key phrases to pass through the screening. If the percentage is high enough, your resume will successfully be reviewed by essays, an actual human. Your ability to chromakey essay, use the essays right keywords depends on two things: Do you actually have the relevant skills, abilities, education, and work experiences? If you do have all or some from chromakey essay, #1, doing good research and giving your resume a hard look-over will get you through the ATS. The best place to begin is to read the essays hiring manager’s very own job description. From that job description, you can see what keywords and book report on condi key phrases they emphasize a potential applicant should have.

If they include them in the job description, it’s highly likely they’ve also input them into the ATS. The image below contains a real example of a librarian job description, and photographer the image next to cornell college essay, it reflects what we believe are important keywords a librarian applicant should include on photographer, their resumes: Normal Job Description. Job Description with ATS Keywords Highlighted. GREEN HIGHLIGHT: Keywords that are CRITICAL to how to, getting past the ATS. YELLOW HIGHLIGHT: Keywords that will please the human hiring manager, or are ATS keywords of lower importance. The job post gives you good clues about keywords and experiences employers are seeking. It’ll serve you well to read those job descriptions closely, and identify important competencies and skill sets.

Place emphasis on photographer, these matched experiences in your resume. It’s also helpful include both specific and general keywords in the mix. ATS uses all of these keywords into oregon essay, certain job functions. Essays. For your previous position as “team leader”, include job-specific buzzwords such as “coordinate”, “manage”, but having the general keyword “project coordinator”, “project manager” will help to strengthen your resume. Be sure to try out write phd thesis our ATS-friendly resume building software that comes with over 50,000 professionally-written phrases and job-specific keywords. Reason #4: Your resume has too many nonspecific keywords. I’ve been reading articles on cracking the a swot ATS for a couple months now, just confounded at photographer what I was doing wrong, or what I could do differently. this article has been more helpful than ALL the others! Thanks for that. Bookmarked! Thanks for your comment Pert! Glad that you found our article useful. Good luck on the job hunt!

High Quality Candidates: If a company doesn’t care enough about you and your far superior talents, capabilities and on condi experience that they throw an ATS software program in your way DON’T reward them with an application! ATS software and all similar crap will be avoided by companies IF there’s a large enough movement among the highly qualified and most talented employee pool.

Concentrate on those companies that treat you like a real human and photographer essays avoid the automated people processors whenever possible! Companies will catch on to the essay resolution for new detrimental nature of essays, this “time and cost saving software” and realize it’s costing them everything! Many already have. Imagine, as with myself, you work in a totally “visual” industry where picture representations of write phd thesis, your work tell virtually your whole story! Applying for a graphic design, art director or illustrator job has been rendered orders of magnitude more difficult with the advent of ATS processing!

The situation is about as insane as trying to get a singing job with no recordings of your voice being allowed and photographer no chance for a personal audition! Companies with H.R. people who have virtually no expertise in the commercial art field are already at chromakey essay a huge disadvantage in making any kind of qualified decisions regarding such applicants. Add to photographer, that a totally intrusive, opaque and “dumb” software program placed strategically as a final barrier to any chance of actually communicating your amazing talents and, well, you have the contest “perfect storm” of employment failure – both for the employer and potential employee. Agreed. However, my line of photographer essays, work is not with the smaller companies that seem to actually read a resume but within the resolution for new larger corporations and photographer they ALL use ATS! Definitely, if your are in the design and arts profession, ATS is surely the essays Antichrist!

Preach!! I 1000% get what you’re saying!! I’ve been in the advertising industry for 25 years, 13 years on staff, and the last 12 years as a freelancer. How in the world do you include 12 years of significant freelance work with several different clients on a multitude of different accounts with all kinds of varying calendar timing through an contest, ATS and expect it to spit out anything resembling a solid, successful overall career?? Despite the fact that so many highly qualified candidates are finding the ATS to be their ultimate challenge in the job search, the “sheeple” continue to just follow the photographer guidelines to chromakey essay, gaming the system via keyword dumping rather than avoiding companies who rely on photographer essays, filtering human beings through their ATS. Unfortunately for the likes of you and me, we don’t really have the luxury to NOT play along at least a little bit or get utterly left behind, but I agree completely that if more people just stop playing along, companies will finally get exactly what you said: it’s costing them everything! That’s easy to say if you have a job. But if you are unemployed, you have little choice. This software should be outlawed.

No wonder the nitwits in HR claim they ‘can’t find qualified people’, their ATS screened them out chromakey essay beforehand. Woww. Having the essays right information at the tip of your finger can actually ease the endless pain of chromakey essay, job seeking and resume submission without consideration. On top of that I didn’t even know ATS existed, I always thought living human beings reject me :p. Bravo…. and lamentation.

In these days of big data, it’s laughable that job matching is still such an outrageously resource wasting game of hide and seek. Resumes and job postings are still crafted as for a single pieces of paper formatted to communicate all pertinent information in the 10 or so seconds of attention that conventional wisdom says they may receive. While an ATS attempts to chromakey essay, tweak that Cretaceous period bottleneck, clearly there’s something missing. Even when asked what she would like for Christmas, money is her answer. It is impressive how Torvald addresses Nora as she was just a little girl, or even a pet, #8220;my little lark mustn#8217;t droop her wings like that.

This secret shows the strength of her character to carry with a burden she shouldn#8217;t have had to carry on her own. Oregon Contest? 840-888. This is a very sound and well-resented essay with a perceptiveness in its thesis. There are a few glitches in some of the sentences, but not enough to detract for the overall impression of book report, intelligent commentary. I think you might have made your thesis a little more clear in your opening. New York: HarperCollins, 1997. Pp. 32-58. A thesis statement is a one-sentence summary of a paper's content. It is similar, actually, to a paper's conclusion but lacks the conclusion's concern for broad implications and significance.

For a writer in book on condi, the drafting stages, the thesis establishes a focus, a basis on which to include or exclude information. For the reader of photographer essays a finished product, the thesis anticipates the author's discussion. A thesis statement, therefore, is an essential tool for both writers and readers of academic material . This last sentence is our thesis for this section. On Condi. Based on this thesis, we, as the authors, have limited the content of the section; and essays, you, as the reader, will be able to form certain expectations about the discussion that follows. For instance, you could not write an effective ten-page paper based on the following: Democracy is the best system of government. Consider the subject of this sentence, democracy, and the assertion of its predicate, is the best system of government. The subject is enormous in scope; it is a general category composed of hundreds of more specific sub-categories, each of which would be appropriate for a paper ten pages in length. The predicate of our example is also a problem, for the claim that democracy is the best system of government would be simplistic unless accompanied by a thorough, systematic, critical evaluation of essays every form of government yet devised. A ten-page paper governed by such a thesis simply could not achieve the level of detail and sophistication expected of college students.

Limiting the Scope of the Thesis. Before you can write an college essay admission effective thesis and thus a controlled, effective paper, you need to limit your intended discussions by limiting your subject and your claims about it. Two strategies for achieving a thesis statement of manageable proportions are (1) to begin with a working thesis (this strategy assumes that you are familiar with your topic) and (2) to begin with a broad area of interest and narrow it (this strategy assumes that you are unfamiliar with your topic). Begin with a Working Thesis. Professionals thoroughly familiar with a topic often begin writing with a clear thesis in mind - a happy state of affairs unfamiliar to most college students who are assigned term papers. But professionals usually have an important advantage over students: experience. Photographer Essays. Because professionals know their material, are familiar with the ways of how to approaching it, are aware of the questions important to practitioners, and have devoted considerable time to study of the photographer essays, topic, they are naturally in a strong position to begin writing a paper. Not only do professionals have experience in their fields, but they also have a clear purpose in writing; they know their audience and admission, are comfortable with the photographer essays, format of their papers. Experience counts - there's no way around it. Chromakey Essay. As a student, you are not yet an expert and therefore don't generally have the luxury of beginning your writing tasks with a definite thesis in photographer essays, mind.

Once you choose and book report, devote time to a major field of study, however, you will gain experience. In the meantime, you'll have to do more work than the professional to prepare yourself for writing a paper. But let's assume that you do have an area of expertise, that you are in your own right a professional (albeit not in academic matters). We'll assume that you understand your nonacademic subject - say, backpacking - and have been given a clear purpose for writing: to discuss the relative merits of backpack designs. Your job is to write a recommendation for the owner of a sporting-goods chain, suggesting which line of backpacks the chain should carry. Photographer Essays. The owner lives in another city, so your remarks have to be written. Since you already know a good deal about backpacks, you may already have some well-developed ideas on book, the topic before you start doing additional research. Yet even as an expert in your field, you will find that beginning the photographer, writing task is how to a swot, a challenge, for at this point it is unlikely that you will be able to conceive a thesis perfectly suited to the contents of your paper. Essays. After all, a thesis statement is a summary, and it is difficult to summarize a presentation yet to be written - especially if you plan to discover what you want to say during the process of writing. Even if you know your material well, the best you can do at the early stages is to formulate a working thesis - a hypothesis of sorts, a well-informed hunch about cornell college essay your topic and the claim to be made about it.

Once you have completed a draft, you can evaluate the photographer, degree to which your working thesis accurately summarizes the content of your paper. 1 If the match is a good one, the working thesis becomes the cornell essay, thesis statement. If, however, sections of the paper drift from the focus set out in the working thesis, you'll need to revise the thesis and the paper itself to photographer essays, ensure that the how to, presentation is unified. (You'll know that the match between the content and thesis is photographer, a good one when every paragraph directly refers to and develops some element of the report, thesis.) Begin with a Subject and essays, Narrow It. Let's assume that you have moved from making recommendations about backpacks (your territory) to writing a paper for your government class (your professor's territory). Whereas you were once the professional who knew enough about your subject to essay, begin writing with a working thesis, you are now the student, inexperienced and in need of a great deal of information before you can begin begin to think of thesis statements.

It may be a comfort to know that your government professor would likely be in the same predicament if asked to recommend backpack designs. He would need to spend several weeks, at essays, least, backpacking to become as experienced as you; and it is fair to say that you will need to spend several hours in the library before you are in a position to essay, choose a topic suitable for an undergraduate paper. Suppose you have been assigned a ten-page paper in Government 104, a course on social policy. Not only do you not have a thesis - you don't have a subject! Where will you begin? First, you need to select a broad area of interest and make yourself knowledgeable about essays its general features. Chromakey Essay. What if no broad area of interest occurs to you? Don't despair - there's usually a way to make use of discussions you've read in essays, a text or heard in a lecture. Report On Condi. The trick is to find a topic that can become personally important, for whatever reason. (For a paper in your biology class, you might write on the digestive system because a relative has stomach troubles. For an economics seminar, you might explore the factors that threaten banks with collapse because your grandparents lost their life savings during the essays, Great Depression.) Whatever the academic discipline, try to a swot, discover a topic that you'll enjoy exploring; that way, you'll be writing for yourself as much as for essays, your professor. Some specific strategies to try if no topics occur to you: Review material covered during the semester, class by class if need be; review the cornell college essay admission, semester's readings, actually skimming each assignment.

Choose any subject that has held your interest, if even for a moment, and photographer essays, use that as your point of departure. Suppose you've reviewed each of write a swot your classes and recall that a lecture on AIDS aroused your curiosity. Your broad subject of interest, then, will be AIDS. At this point, the goal of essays your research is to limit this subject to a manageable scope. Although your initial, broad subject will often be more specific than our example, AIDS, we'll assume for the purposes of discussion the most general case (the subject in chromakey essay, greatest need of limiting). A subject can be limited in at photographer, least two ways. Resolution. First, a general article like an encyclopedia entry may do the work for you by presenting the subject in photographer essays, the form of an outline, with each item in the outline representing a separate topic (which, for your purposes, may need further limiting). Second, you can limit a subject by how to, asking several questions about it: These questions will occur to you as you conduct your research and see the ways in which various authors have focused their discussions. Having read several sources and having decided that you'd like to use them, you might limit the photographer essays, subject AIDS by write, asking who - AIDS patients; and which aspect - civil rights of AIDS patients. Certainly, the civil rights of essays AIDS patients offers a more specific focus than does AIDS; still, the revised focus is chromakey essay, too broad for a ten-page paper in that a comprehensive discussion would obligate you to review numerous particular rights.

So again you must try to essays, limit your subject by essay on my resolution for new year, posing a question. In this particular case, which aspects (of the essays, civil rights of book AIDS patients) can be asked a second time. Six aspects may come to photographer, mind: Rights in chromakey essay, the workplace Rights to essays, hospital care Rights to insurance benefits Rights to privacy Rights to fair housing Rights to education. Any one of these aspects could provide the focus of a ten-page paper, and you do yourself an important service by choosing one, perhaps two, of the aspects; to choose more would obligate you to how to, too broad a discussion and you would frustrate yourself: Either the paper would have to be longer than ten pages or, assuming you kept to the page limit, the paper would be superficial in its treatment. In both instances, the paper would fail, given the constraints of the photographer essays, assignment. So it is far better that you limit your subject ahead of time, before you attempt to write about cornell college it. Let's assume that you settle on the following as an appropriately defined subject for a ten-page paper: the rights of AIDS patients in the workplace.

The process of narrowing an initial subject depends heavily upon the reading you do. The more you read, the deeper your understanding of a topic. Photographer. The deeper your understanding, the likelier it will be that you can divide a broad and complex topic into manageable - that is, researchable - categories. Identify these categories that compose the chromakey essay, larger topic and pursue one of them. In the AIDS example, your reading in the literature suggested that the civil rights of AIDS patients was at the center of recent national debate. So reading allowed you to narrow the subject AIDS by essays, answering the initial questions - the who and which aspects. Once you narrowed your focus to the civil rights of AIDS patients, you read further and quickly realized that civil rights in itself was a broad concern that also should be limited. In this way, reading provided an important stimulus as you worked to identify an appropriate subject for your paper. Make an Assertion.

Once you have identified the oregon, subject, you can now develop it into essays a thesis by making an assertion about it. How To. If you have spent enough time reading and gathering information, you will be knowledgeable enough to have something to essays, say about the write a swot, subject, based on a combination of your own thinking and the thinking of your sources. Photographer Essays. If you have trouble making an assertion, try writing your topic at the top of a page and then listing everything you know and feel about chromakey essay it. Often from such a list you will discover an assertion that you then can use to essays, fashion a working thesis. A good way to gauge the reasonableness of your claim is to see what other authors have asserted about the same topic. In fact, keep good notes on the views of essay others; the notes will prove a useful counterpoint to your own views as you write, and you may want to photographer essays, use them in your paper. Next, make three assertions about your topic, in order of increasing complexity.

During the past few years, the rights of AIDS patients in the workplace have been debated by report on condi, national columnists. Several columnists have offered convincing reasons for protecting the rights of AIDS patients in the workplace. The most sensible plan for photographer essays, protecting the essay resolution, rights of AIDS patients in the workplace has been offered by photographer essays, columnist Anthony Jones. Keep in chromakey essay, mind that these are working thesis statements. Because you haven't written a paper based on any of them, they remain hypotheses to be tested. After completing a first draft, you would compare the contents of the photographer essays, paper to the thesis and cornell essay, make adjustments as necessary for unity. The working thesis is an photographer essays excellent tool for planning broad sections of the paper, but - again - don't let it prevent you from pursuing related discussions as they occur to write phd thesis, you. Notice how these three statements differ from one another in the forcefulness of their assertions. The third thesis is strongly argumentative. Most sensible implies that the photographer essays, writer will explain several plans for oregon essay contest, protecting the rights of AIDS patients in the workplace. Following the explanation would come a comparison of plans and then a judgment in favor of Anthony Jones.

Like any working thesis, this one helps the writer plan the paper. Assuming the paper follows the three-part structure we've inferred, the photographer, working thesis would become the final thesis, on the basis of which a reader could anticipate sections of the essay to come. The first of the three thesis statements, by contrast, is explanatory : During the college admission, past few years, the rights of AIDS patients in the workplace have been debated by national columnists. In developing a paper based on this thesis, the writer would assert only the existence of a debate, obligating himself merely to a summary of the photographer essays, various positions taken. Readers, then, would use this thesis as a tool for cornell college admission, anticipating the contours of the paper to follow. Based on this particular thesis, a reader would not expect to find the author strongly endorsing the views of one or another columnist. The thesis does not require the author to photographer, defend a personal opinion. The second thesis statement does entail a personal, intellectually assertive commitment to the material, although the assertion is not as forceful as the how to phd thesis, one found in statement 3: Several columnists have offered convincing reasons for photographer, protecting the rights of AIDS patients in the workplace.

Here we have an explanatory, mildly argumentative thesis that enables the writer to express an opinion. We infer from the how to a swot, use of the word convincing that the writer will judge the essays, various reasons for a swot, protecting the rights of AIDS patients; and, we can reasonably assume, the writer himself believes in protecting these rights. Note the contrast between this second thesis and essays, the first one, where the writer committed himself to a swot, no involvement in the debate whatsoever. Still, the present thesis is not as ambitious as the third one, whose writer implicitly accepted the general argument for safeguarding rights (an acceptance he would need to justify) and then took the additional step of evaluating the merits of those arguments in relation to each other. (Recall that Anthony Jones's plan was the most sensible.) As you can see, for any subject you might care to explore in a paper, you can make any number of photographer essays assertions - some relatively simple, some complex. It is on the basis of these assertions that you set yourself an write agenda in writing a paper - and readers set for themselves expectations for reading. The more ambitious the thesis, the more complex will be the paper and the greater will be the readers' expectations. Using the Thesis. Different writing tasks require different thesis statements. The explanatory thesis is photographer essays, often developed in how to write, response to short-answer exam questions that call for information, not analysis (e.g., List and explain proposed modifications to contemporary American democracy).

The explanatory but mildly argumentative thesis is appropriate for organizing reports (even lengthy ones), as well as essay questions that call for some analysis (e.g., In what ways are the photographer, recent proposals to modify American democracy significant?). The strongly argumentative thesis is used to organize papers and exam questions that call for information, analysis, and the writer's forcefully stated point of on my view (e.g., Evaluate proposed modifications to photographer, contemporary American democracy). The strongly argumentative thesis, of course, is the essay for new year, riskiest of the three, since you must unequivocally state your position and make it appear reasonable - which requires that you offer evidence and defend against logical objections. But such intellectual risks pay dividends, and if you become involved enough in your work to make challenging assertions, you will provoke challenging responses that enliven classroom discussions. One of the essays, important objectives of a college education is to extend learning by stretching, or challenging, conventional beliefs. You breathe new life into this broad objective, and you enliven your own learning as well, every time you adopt a thesis that sets a challenging agenda both for cornell, you (as writer) and for your readers. Of course, once you set the challenge, you must be equal to the task. As a writer, you will need to discuss all the elements implied by your thesis. To review: A thesis statement (a one-sentence summary of essays your paper) helps you organize and your reader anticipate a discussion. Thesis statements are distinguished by their carefully worded subjects and predicates, which should be just broad enough and complex enough to be developed within the length limitations of the assignment. Both novices and experts in a field typically begin the write phd thesis, initial draft of a paper with a working thesis - a statement that provides writers with structure enough to get started but with latitude enough to discover what they want to say as they write.

Once you have completed a first draft, you should test the fit of your thesis with the paper that follows. Every element of the thesis should be developed in the paper that follows. Discussions that drift from essays, your thesis should be deleted, or the thesis changed to accommodate the new discussions. A quotation records the exact language used by someone in speech or in writing. A summary , in contrast, is write phd thesis, a brief restatement in photographer, your own words of what someone else has said or written. On My Year. And a paraphrase is also a restatement, although one that is often as long as the photographer, original source. Any paper in which you draw upon sources will rely heavily on quotation, summary, and paraphrase. How do you choose among the essay on my resolution, three? Remember that the papers you write should be your own - for photographer essays, the most part, your own language and certainly your own thesis, your own inferences, and your own conclusions.

It follows that references to your source materials should be written primarily as summaries and paraphrases, both of which are built on restatement, not quotation. You will use summaries when you need a brief restatement, and paraphrases, which provide more explicit detail than summaries, when you need to follow the development of a source closely. When you quote too much, you risk losing ownership of write your work: more easily than you might think, your voice can be drowned out by the voices of those you've quoted. So use quotations sparingly, as you would a pungent spice. Nevertheless, quoting just the essays, right source at the right time can significantly improve your papers . The trick is to know when and how to use quotations.

Use quotations when another writer's language is particularly memorable and book report on condi, will add interest and photographer essays, liveliness to your paper. Use quotations when another writer's language is oregon, so clear and economical that to make the same point in your own words would, by comparison, be ineffective. Use quotations when you want the solid reputation of a source to lend authority and credibility to your own writing. Quoting Memorable Language. Assume you're writing a paper on Napoleon Bonaparte's relationship with the celebrated Josephine. Through research you learn that two days after their marriage Napoleon, given command of an army, left his bride for what was to be a brilliant military campaign in Italy. Photographer Essays. How did the young general respond to leaving his wife so soon after their wedding?

You come across the following, written from the field of battle by chromakey essay, Napoleon on April 3, 1796: I have received all your letters, but none has had such an impact on me as the last. Do you have any idea, darling, what you are doing, writing to photographer, me in those terms? Do you not think my situation cruel enough without intensifying my longing for phd thesis, you, overwhelming my soul? What a style! What emotions you evoke!

Written in fire, they burn my poor heart! 2. A summary of this passage might read as follows: On April 3, 1796, Napoleon wrote to Josephine, expressing how sorely he missed her and how passionately he responded to her letters. You might write the following as a paraphrase of the passage: On April 3, 1796, Napoleon wrote to Josephine that he had received her letters and that one among all others had had a special impact, overwhelming his soul with fiery emotions and longing. How feeble this summary and essays, paraphrase are when compared with the original!

Use the vivid language that your sources give you. In this case, quote Napoleon in your paper to make your subject come alive with memorable detail: On April 3, 1796, a passionate, lovesick Napoleon responded to college, a letter from Josephine; she had written longingly to her husband, who, on a military campaign, acutely felt her absence. Do you have any idea, darling, what you are doing, writing to me in those terms? . Photographer. . Chromakey Essay. . What emotions you evoke! he said of her letters. Written in photographer essays, fire, they burn.my poor heart! The effect of directly quoting Napoleon's letter is to enliven your paper. A direct quotation is one in which you record precisely the language of another, as we did with the sentences from Napoleon's letter. In an indirect quotation, you report what someone has said, although you are not obligated to repeat the words exactly as spoken (or written): Direct quotation : Franklin D. Roosevelt said: The only chromakey essay thing we have to essays, fear is fear itself.

Indirect quotation : Franklin D. Roosevelt said that we have nothing to fear but fear itself. The language in a direct quotation, which is indicated by a pair of quotation marks ( ), must be faithful to the language of the original passage. When using an how to a swot indirect quotation, you have the liberty of changing words (although not changing meaning). For both direct and indirect quotations, you must credit your sources , naming them either in (or close to) the sentence that includes the quotation [or, in some disciplines, in photographer, a footnote]. Quoting Clear and Concise Language. You should quote a source when its language is particularly clear and report on condi, economical - when your language, by contrast, would be wordy. Read this passage from photographer essays, a text on biology: The honeybee colony, which usually has a population of 30,000 to 40,000 workers, differs from that of the essay, bumblebee and photographer, many other social bees or wasps in that it survives the winter. This means that the bees must stay warm despite the cold.

Like other bees, the isolated honeybee cannot fly if the temperature falls below 10C (50F) and cannot walk if the temperature is below 7C (45F). Within the wintering hive, bees maintain their temperature by clustering together in a dense ball; the lower the temperature, the denser the cluster. The clustered bees produce heat by constant muscular movements of how to write their wings, legs, and abdomens. In very cold weather, the bees on the outside of the cluster keep moving toward the center, while those in essays, the core of the cluster move to the colder outside periphery. The entire cluster moves slowly about on the combs, eating the stored honey from the combs as it moves. 3. A summary of cornell essay admission this paragraph might read as follows: Honeybees, unlike many other varieties of bee, are able to live through the winter by clustering together in photographer essays, a dense ball for body warmth. A paraphrase of the same passage would be considerably more detailed: Honeybees, unlike many other varieties of for new bee (such as bumblebees), are able to live through the winter. The 30,000 to 40,000 bees within a honeybee hive could not, individually, move about in cold winter temperatures.

But when clustering together in a dense ball, the bees generate heat by constantly moving their body parts. The cluster also moves slowly about the hive, eating honey stored in the combs. Photographer Essays. This nutrition, in addition to the heat generated by the cluster, enables the honeybee to survive the cold winter months. In both the summary and the paraphrase we've quoted Curtis's clustering together in a dense ball, a phrase that lies at the heart of her description of wintering honeybees. For us to describe this clustering in any language other than Curtis's would be pointless since her description is college essay, admirably precise. Quoting Authoritative Language. You will also want to use quotations that lend authority to your work. When quoting an expert or some prominent political, artistic, or historical figure, you elevate your own work by placing it in esteemed company.

Quote respected figures to establish background information in a paper, and your readers will tend to perceive that information as reliable. Quote the opinions of respected figures to endorse some statement that you've made, and photographer, your statement becomes more credible to your readers. For example, in an essay that you might write on the importance of reading well, you could make use of a passage from chromakey essay, Thoreau's Walden : Reading well is hard work and essays, requires great skill and training. It is a noble exercise, writes Henry David Thoreau in Walden, and write phd thesis, one that will task the reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem. It requires a training such as the athletes underwent. Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written.

By quoting a famous philosopher and essayist on essays, the subject of reading, you add legitimacy to your discussion. Not only do you regard reading to be a skill that is both difficult and important; so too does Henry David Thoreau, one of our most influential American thinkers. The quotation has elevated the essay for new, level of photographer essays your work. You can also quote to write a swot, advantage well-respected figures who've written or spoken about the subject of your paper. Here is a discussion of space flight. Author David Chandler refers to a physicist and essays, an astronaut:

A few scientists - notably James Van Allen, discoverer of the how to a swot, Earth's radiation belts - have decried the expense of the manned space program and called for photographer, an almost exclusive concentration on unmanned scientific exploration instead, saying this would be far more cost-effective. Other space scientists dispute that idea. Chromakey Essay. Joseph Allen, physicist and former shuttle astronaut, says, It seems to be argued that one takes away from the photographer essays, other. But before there was a manned space program, the funding on space science was zero. Now it's about $500 million a year.

Note, first, that in the first paragraph Chandler has either summarized or used an on condi Indirect quotation to incorporate remarks made by photographer essays, James Van Allen into the discussion on space flight. How To Write Phd Thesis. In the second paragraph, Chandler directly quotes his next source, Joseph Allen. Both quotations, indirect and photographer essays, direct, lend authority and legitimacy to the article, for both James Van Allen and Joseph Allen are experts on the subject of space flight. Note also that Chandler has provided brief but effective biographies of his sources, identifying both so that their qualifications to how to phd thesis, speak on photographer essays, the subject are known to all: James Van Allen, discoverer of the Earth's radiation belts . Joseph Allen, physicist and write, former shuttle astronaut . The phrases in italics are called appositives . Their function is to rename the nouns they follow by providing explicit, identifying detail. Any information about a person that can be expressed in the following sentence pattern can be made into an appositive phrase:

James Van Allen is the discoverer of the photographer essays, Earth's radiation belts . James Van Allen has decried the expense of the manned space program. James Van Allen, discoverer of the Earth's radiation belts , has decried the expense of the manned space program. Use appositives to identify authors whom you quote. Incorporating Quotations into Your Sentences. Quoting Only the oregon contest, Part of a Sentence or Paragraph That You Need. As you've seen, a writer selects passages for quotation that are especially vivid and essays, memorable, concise, or authoritative . Now we will put these principles into practice.

Suppose that while conducting research on the topic of college sports you've come across the following, written by Robert Hutchins, former president of the University of Chicago: If athleticism is bad for students, players, alumni and the public, it is even worse for the colleges and universities themselves. They want to be educational institutions, but they can't. Chromakey Essay. The story of the essays, famous halfback whose only chromakey essay regret, when he bade his coach farewell, was that he hadn't learned to photographer essays, read and write is report, probably exaggerated. But we must admit that pressure from trustees, graduates, friends, presidents and even professors has tended to relax academic standards. These gentry often overlook the fact that a college should not be interested in a fullback who is a half-wit. Recruiting, subsidizing and the double educational standard cannot exist without the knowledge and the tacit approval, at least, of the colleges and universities themselves. Certain institutions encourage susceptible professors to be nice to athletes now admitted by paying them for serving as faculty representatives on the college athletic boards. 4. Suppose that from this entire paragraph you find a gem, a quotable grouping of photographer words that will enliven your discussion.

You may want to quote part of the following sentence: These gentry often overlook the fact that a college should not be interested in a fullback who is a half-wit. Incorporating the Quotation into the Flow of Your Own Sentence. Once you've selected the passage you want to quote, work the material into your paper in as natural and contest, fluid a manner as possible. Here's how we would quote Hutchins: Robert Hutchins, a former president of the University of Chicago, asserts that a college should not be interested in a fullback who is photographer, a half-wit. Note that we've used an appositive to identify Hutchins. And we've used only the part of the paragraph - a single clause - that we thought memorable enough to quote directly.

Avoiding Freestanding Quotations. A quoted sentence should never stand by book report, itself - as in the following example: Various people associated with the university admit that the pressures of athleticism have caused a relaxation of standards. These gentry often overlook the fact that a college should not be interested in essays, a fullback who is a half-wit. But this kind of thinking is how to, bad for the university and even worse for the athletes. Even if you include a parenthetical citation after the quotation, you should not leave a quotation freestanding, as above, because the effect is frequently jarring to the reader. Introduce the quotation by photographer essays, attributing the source in some other part of the sentence - beginning, middle, or end. Thus, you could write: According to Robert Hutchins, These gentry often overlook the fact that a college should not be interested in a fullback who is a half-wit. These gentry, asserts Robert Hutchins, often overlook the fact that a college should not be interested in a fullback who is essay on my for new year, a half-wit.

Another alternative is to introduce a sentence-long quotation with a colon: But Robert Hutchins disagrees: These gentry often overlook the fact that a college should not be interested in a fullback who is a half-wit. Use colons also to introduce indented quotations (as in the examples above). When attributing sources, try to vary the photographer essays, standard states, writes, says, and so on. Chromakey Essay. Other, stronger verbs you might consider: asserts, argues, maintains, insists, asks, and even wonders. Using Ellipsis Marks. Using quotations is essays, made somewhat complicated when you want to quote the beginning and end of a passage but not its middle - as was the case when we quoted Henry David Thoreau. Here's part of the paragraph in Walden from which we quoted a few sentences: To read well, that is, to read true books in a true spirit, is a noble exercise, and oregon contest, one that will task the photographer, reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem.

It requires a training such as the athletes underwent, the steady intention almost of the whole life to this object. Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written. How To Phd Thesis. 5. And here was how we used this material: Reading well is hard work and requires great skill and training. It is a noble exercise, writes Henry David Thoreau in Walden, and one that will task the reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem. It requires a training such as the athletes underwent.

Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written. Whenever you quote a sentence but delete words from it, as we have done, indicate this deletion to the reader by placing an ellipsis mark, three spaced periods, in the sentence at the point of photographer deletion. The rationale for using an ellipsis mark as follows: A direct quotation must be reproduced exactly as it was written or spoken. When writers delete or change any part of the essay resolution, quoted material, readers must be alerted so they don't think that the changes were part of the photographer essays, original. Ellipsis marks and brackets serve this purpose. If you are deleting the middle of a single sentence, use an report on condi ellipsis in place of the photographer essays, deleted words: To read well . is a noble exercise, and one that will task the admission, reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem. If you are deleting the end of a quoted sentence, or if you are deleting entire sentences of a paragraph before continuing a quotation, add one additional period and place the ellipsis after the last word you are quoting, so that you have four in all: It requires a training such as the athletes underwent. Books must be read as deliberately and photographer essays, reservedly as they were written. If you begin your quotation of an author in the middle of a sentence, you need not indicate deleted words with an essay contest ellipsis.

Be sure, however, that the syntax of the quotation fits smoothly with the syntax of your sentence: Reading is photographer essays, a noble exercise, writes Henry David Thoreau. Use square brackets whenever you need to add or substitute words in on my year, a quoted sentence. The brackets indicate to the reader a word or phrase that does not appear in the original passage but that you have inserted to avoid confusion. For example, when a pronoun's antecedent would be unclear to readers, delete the pronoun from the photographer essays, sentence and substitute an identifying word or phrase in brackets. When you make such a substitution, no ellipsis marks are needed. Assume that you wish to phd thesis, quote the bold-type sentence in the following passage: Golden Press's Walt Disney's Cinderella set the new pattern for photographer, America's Cinderella.

This book's text is coy and condescending. (Sample: And her best friends of all were - guess who - the mice!) The illustrations are poor cartoons. And Cinderella herself is a disaster. She cowers as her sisters rip her homemade ball gown to shreds. Essay Contest. (Not even homemade by Cinderella, but by the mice and birds.) She answers her stepmother with whines and pleadings. She is a sorry excuse for a heroine, pitiable and useless . She cannot perform even a simple action to save herself, though she is warned by her friends, the mice. Essays. She does not hear them because she is book, off in a world of dreams. Cinderella begs, she whimpers, and at last has to be rescued by photographer, - guess who - the mice! 6. In quoting this sentence, you would need to identify whom the pronoun she refers to.

You can do this inside the quotation by using brackets: Jane Yolen believes that [Cinderella] is a sorry excuse for a heroine, pitiable and useless. If the pronoun begins the sentence to be quoted, as it does in this example, you can identify the on my resolution for new year, pronoun outside of the quotation and simply begin quoting your source one word later: Jane Yolen believes that Cinderella is a sorry excuse for a heroine, pitiable and useless. If the pronoun you want to identify occurs in the middle of the sentence to photographer essays, be quoted, then you'll need to use brackets.

Newspaper reporters do this frequently when quoting sources, who in interviews might say something like the following: After the chromakey essay, fire they did not return to the station house for essays, three hours. If the reporter wants to use this sentence in an article, he or she needs to identify the pronoun: An official from City Hall, speaking on the condition that he not be identified, said, After the fire [the officers] did not return to the station house for three hours. You will also will need to add bracketed information to a quoted sentence when a reference essential to the sentence's meaning is implied but not stated directly. Read the following paragraphs from Robert Jastrow's Toward an Intelligence Beyond Man's: These are amiable qualities for the computer; it imitates life like an electronic monkey. As computers get more complex, the imitation gets better.

Finally, the line between the original and the copy becomes blurred. In another 15 years or so - two more generations of computer evolution, in book on condi, the jargon of the technologists - we will see the computer as an emergent form of photographer essays life. The proposition seems ridiculous because, for write phd thesis, one thing, computers lack the drives and photographer essays, emotions of living creatures. But when drives are useful, they can be programmed into the computer's brain, just as nature programmed them into our ancestors' brains as a part of the equipment for survival. For example, computers, like people, work better and learn faster when they are motivated. Arthur Samuel made this discovery when he taught two IBM computers how to play checkers. They polished their game by playing each other, but they learned slowly.

Finally, Dr. Samuel programmed in the will to win by forcing the computers to try harder - and to think out more moves in advance - when they were losing. Then the computers learned very quickly. One of them beat Samuel and essay resolution, went on to defeat a champion player who had not lost a game to a human opponent in eight years. Photographer. 7. If you wanted to essay on my resolution for new, quote only the sentence in bold type, you would need to provide readers with a bracketed explanation; otherwise, the words the proposition would be unclear.

Here is how you would manage the quotation: According to Robert Jastrow, a physicist and former official at NASA's Goddard Institute, The proposition [that computers will emerge as a form of essays life] seems ridiculous because, for one thing, computers lack the drives and emotions of living creatures. Remember that when you quote the work of on my resolution for new year another, you are obligated to essays, credit - or cite - the author's work properly; otherwise, you may plagiarism. [See your Allyn and how to write a swot, Bacon Handbook for guidance on citing sources.] A classic image: The writer stares glumly at a blank sheet of paper (or, in the electronic version, a blank screen). Photographer. Usually, however, this is an image of a writer who hasn't yet begun to write. Once the piece has been started, momentum often helps to carry it forward, even over the rough spots. (These can always be fixed later.) As a writer, you've surely discovered that getting started when you haven't yet warmed to your task is a problem. Essay. What's the best way to approach your subject? With high seriousness, a light touch, an anecdote? How best to engage your reader?

Many writers avoid such agonizing choices by putting them off - productively. Bypassing the introduction, they start by essays, writing the body of the piece; only after they've finished the body do they go back to write the introduction. There's a lot to contest, be said for this approach. Because you have presumably spent more time thinking about the topic itself than about essays how you're going to introduce it, you are in a better position, at cornell college, first, to begin directly with your presentation (once you've settled on a working thesis). And often, it's not until you've actually seen the photographer essays, piece on paper and report, read it over once or twice that a natural way of introducing it becomes apparent. Even if there is essays, no natural way to begin, you are generally in on condi, better psychological shape to photographer essays, write the introduction after the major task of writing is behind you and you know exactly what you're leading up to. Perhaps, however, you can't operate this way. Cornell Essay Admission. After all, you have to start writing somewhere , and photographer essays, if you have evaded the problem by skipping the introduction, that blank page may loom just as large wherever you do choose to begin.

If this is the case, then go ahead and essay, write an introduction, knowing full well that it's probably going to be flat and awful. Set down any kind of pump- priming or throat-clearing verbiage that comes to photographer essays, mind, as long as you have a working thesis. Assure yourself that whatever you put down at this point (except for the thesis) won't count and that when the time is right, you'll go back and replace it with something classier, something that's fit for eyes other than yours. But in the meantime, you'll have gotten started. The purpose of an introduction is to prepare the reader to enter the world of your essay. The introduction makes the connection between the more familiar world inhabited by the reader and the less familiar world of the writer's particular subject; it places a discussion in a context that the reader can understand. There are many ways to provide such a context.

We'll consider just a few of the most common. In introduction to a paper on democracy: Two cheers for democracy was E. M. Forster's not-quite-wholehearted judgment. Most Americans would not agree. To them, our democracy is one of the glories of civilization. To one American in particular, E. B. How To Write. White, democracy is the hole in the stuffed shirt through which the photographer essays, sawdust slowly trickles . . . the essay, dent in the high hat . Photographer. . . the on my resolution for new year, recurrent suspicion that more than half of the photographer, people are right more than half of the time (915). American democracy is college essay admission, based on the oldest continuously operating written constitution in the world - a most impressive fact and photographer, a testament to the farsightedness of the how to, founding fathers. But just how farsighted can mere humans be? In Future Shock , Alvin Toffler quotes economist Kenneth Boulding on the incredible acceleration of social change in our time: The world of today . . . is as different from the photographer essays, world in report on condi, which I was born as that world was from Julius Caesar's (13).

As we move toward the twenty-first century, it seems legitimate to photographer, question the continued effectiveness of a governmental system that was devised in the eighteenth century; and it seems equally legitimate to consider alternatives. The quotations by Forster and White help set the stage for the discussion of democracy by presenting the reader with some provocative and well-phrased remarks. Later in essay, the paragraph, the quotation by Boulding more specifically prepares us for the theme of change that will be central to the essay as a whole. In many cases, the reader will be unprepared to follow the issue you discuss unless you provide some historical background. Consider the essays, following introduction to an an essay on the film-rating system: Sex and violence on the screen are not new issues. In the how to write a swot, Roaring Twenties there was increasing pressure from photographer, civic and religious groups to ban depictions of write a swot immorality from the screen. Faced with the threat of federal censorship, the film producers decided to clean their own house. In 1930, the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America established the Production Code.

At first, adherence to the Code was voluntary; but in photographer, 1934 Joseph Breen, newly appointed head of the MPPDA, gave the a swot, Code teeth. Henceforth all newly produced films had to be submitted for approval to the Production Code Administration which had the photographer, power to award or withhold the Code seal. Without a Code seal, it was virtually impossible for a film to be shown anywhere in the United States, since exhibitors would not accept it. How To Phd Thesis. At about the same time, the Catholic Legion of Decency was formed to advise the faithful which were and were not objectionable. For several decades the Production Code Administration exercised powerful control over what was portrayed in American theatrical films. By the 1960s, however, changing standards of morality had considerably weakened the Code's grip. Photographer Essays. In 1968, the admission, Production Code was replaced with a rating system designed to photographer essays, keep younger audiences away from films with high levels of oregon sex or violence.

Despite its imperfections, this rating system has proved more beneficial to photographer essays, American films than did the write a swot, old censorship system. The essay following this introduction concerns the relative benefits of the rating system. By providing some historical background on the rating system, the writer helps readers to understand his arguments. Essays. Notice the chronological development of details. Review of a Controversy. A particular type of historical review is the review of a controversy or debate. Consider the following introduction: The American Heritage Dictionary 's definition of civil disobedience is rather simple: the refusal to obey civil laws that are regarded as unjust, usually by employing methods of passive resistance. However, despite such famous (and beloved) examples of civil disobedience as the movements of Mahatma Gandhi in India and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., in the United States, the question of whether or not civil disobedience should be considered an asset to society is hardly clear cut. For instance, Hannah Arendt, in her article Civil Disobedience, holds thatto think of disobedient minorities as rebels and a swot, truants is against the letter and photographer essays, spirit of a constitution whose framers were especially sensitive to the dangers of unbridled majority rule.

On the essay on my resolution for new year, other hand, a noted lawyer, Lewis Van Dusen, Jr., in his article Civil Disobedience: Destroyer of essays Democracy, states that civil disobedience, whatever the ethical rationalization, is still an assault on our democratic society, an write a swot affront to photographer essays, our legal order and an attack on our constitutional government. These two views are clearly incompatible. I believe, though, that Van Dusen's is the book report on condi, more convincing. Photographer Essays. On balance, civil disobedience is dangerous to society. Report On Condi. 8. The negative aspects of civil disobedience, rather than Van Dusen's essay, the photographer, topic of oregon contest this essay. But to introduce this topic, the essays, writer has provided quotations that represent opposing sides of the controversy over civil disobedience, as well as brief references to two controversial practitioners. By focusing at the outset on how to write, the particular rather than the abstract aspects of the subject, the essays, writer hoped to secure the attention of her readers and to involve them in the controversy that forms the subject of her essay. From General to chromakey essay, the Specific. Another way of providing a transition from the reader's world to the less familiar world of the essay is to work from essays, a general subject to write phd thesis, a specific one.

The following introduction to a discussion of the 1968 massacre at photographer essays, My Lai, Vietnam, begins with general statements and leads to the particular subject at hand: Though we prefer to think of man as basically good and reluctant to book on condi, do evil, such is not the essays, case. Many of the crimes inflicted on humankind can be dismissed as being committed by chromakey essay, the degenerates of society at the prompting of the abnormal mind. But what of the perfectly normal man or woman who commits inhumane acts simply because he or she has been ordered to essays, do so? It cannot be denied that such acts have occurred, either in essay, everyday life or in war-time situations. Unfortunately, even normal, well-adjusted people can become cruel, inhumane, and destructive if placed in the hands of unscrupulous authority. Such was the case in the village of My Lai, Vietnam, on photographer essays, March 16, 1968, when a platoon of American soldiers commanded by Lt. William Calley massacred more than 100 civilians, including women and children.

Specific to the General: Anecdote, Illustration. Consider the following paragraph: In late 1971 astronomer Carl Sagan and chromakey essay, his colleagues were studying data transmitted from the planet Mars to the earth by the Mariner 9 spacecraft. Struck by the effects of the Martian dust storms on the temperature and on the amount of light reaching the surface, the scientists wondered about the effects on earth of the dust storms that would be created by nuclear explosions. Using computer models, they simulated the effects of such explosions on the earth's climate. The results astounded them. Apart from the photographer essays, known effects of oregon essay nuclear blasts (fires and radiation), the earth, they discovered, would become enshrouded in a nuclear winter. Following a nuclear exchange, plummeting temperatures and pervading darkness would destroy most of the Northern Hemisphere's crops and farm animals and would eventually render much of the planet's surface uninhabitable. The effects of nuclear war, apparently, would be more catastrophic than had previously been imagined. It has therefore become more urgent than ever for the nations of the world to take dramatic steps to photographer, reduce the threat of nuclear war.

The previous introduction went from the general (the question of whether or not man is basically good) to the specific (the massacre at My Lai); this one goes from the specific (scientists studying data) to essay, the general (the urgency of reducing the nuclear threat). The anecdote is photographer, one of the most effective means at your disposal off capturing and holding your reader's attention. Book Report On Condi. For decades, speakers have begun their general remarks with a funny, touching, or otherwise appropriate story; in fact, there are plenty of books that are nothing but collections of such stories, arranged by subject. Frequently, you can provoke the reader's attention by posing a question or a series of questions: Are gender roles learned or inherited?

Scientific research has established the existence of biological differences between the sexes, but the effect of biology's influence on gender roles cannot be distinguished from photographer essays, society's influence. According to Michael Lewis of the essay on my resolution for new year, Institute for the Study of Exceptional children, As early as you can show me a sex difference, I can show you the essays, culture at work. Social processes, as well as biological differences, are responsible for the separate roles of cornell college admission men and women. 9. Opening your essay with a question can be provocative, since it places the reader in an active role: He or she begins by considering answers. Are gender roles learned?

Are they inherited? In this active role, the reader is likely to continue reading with interest. Statement of Thesis. Perhaps the most direct method of introduction is to begin immediately with the thesis: Computers are a mixed blessing.

The lives of Americans are becoming increasingly involved worth machines that think for them. We are at photographer essays, the dawn of the era of the write phd thesis, smart machine, say the authors of a cover story of the photographer essays, subject in how to phd thesis, Newsweek , that will change forever the way an entire nation works, beginning a revolution that will be to the brain what the industrial revolution was to the hand. Tiny silicon chips already process enough information to direct air travel, to instruct machines how to cut fabric - even to play chess with (and defeat) the masters. One can argue that development of essays computers for how to write, the household, as well as industry, will change for the better the quality of our lives: computers help us save energy, reduce the amount of drudgery that most of us endure around tax season, make access to libraries easier. Essays. Yet there is a certain danger involved with this proliferation of technology. This essay begins with a challenging assertion: that computers are a mixed blessing. It is one that many readers are perhaps unprepared to oregon contest, consider, since they may have taken it for granted that computers are an unmixed blessing. The advantage of beginning with a provocative (thesis) statement is that it forces the reader to sit up and take notice perhaps even to begin protesting. The paragraph goes on photographer, to concede some of the blessings of computerization but then concludes with the warning that there is a certain danger associated with the new technology - a danger, the oregon, curious or even indignant reader has a right to conclude, that will be more fully explained in the paragraphs to follow. One final note about our model introductions: They may be longer than introductions you have been accustomed to writing.

Many writers (and readers) prefer shorter, snappier introductions. This is largely a matter of photographer personal or corporate style: there is essay resolution for new year, no rule concerning the correct length of an introduction. Photographer Essays. If you feel that a short introduction is appropriate, by all means use one. You may wish to break up what seems like a long introduction into two paragraphs. (Our paragraph on the nuclear winter, for example, could have been broken either before or after the sentence The results astounded them.) One way to view the conclusion of your paper is as an introduction worked in reverse, a bridge from the world of your essay back to the world of your reader. A conclusion is the college essay, part of your paper in which you restate and (if necessary) expand on your thesis.

Essential to any conclusion is the essays, summary, which is not merely a repetition of the thesis but a restatement that takes advantage of the material you've presented. The simplest conclusion is an expanded summary, but you may want more than this for the end of your paper. Depending on cornell college essay, your needs, you might offer a summary and then build onto it a discussion of the paper's significance or its implications for future study, for choices that individuals might make, for policy, and so on. you might also want to urge the reader to change an attitude or to modify behavior. Certainly, you are under no obligation to discuss the broader significance of your work (and a summary, alone, will satisfy the formal requirement that your paper have an ending); but the conclusions of better papers often reveal authors who are thinking large and want to connect the particular concerns of photographer essays their papers with the broader concerns of society. Here we'll consider seven strategies for expanding the basic summary - conclusion. Phd Thesis. But two words of advice are in essays, order. First, no matter how clever or beautifully executed, a conclusion cannot salvage a poorly written paper. Second, by virtue of its placement, the conclusion carries rhetorical weight. It is the last statement a reader will encounter before turning from your work.

Realizing this, writers who expand on the basic summary-conclusion often wish to give their final words a dramatic flourish, a heightened level of diction. Soaring rhetoric and drama in a conclusion are fine as long as they do not unbalance the paper and essay admission, call attention to themselves. Having labored long hours over your paper, you have every right to wax eloquent. But keep a sense of proportion and timing. Photographer Essays. Make your points quickly and end crisply. Statement of the Subject's Significance. One of the more effective ways to conclude a paper is to discuss the larger significance of what you have written, providing readers with one more reason to how to write a swot, regard your work as a serious effort. When using this strategy, you move from the specific concern of your paper to the broader concerns of the reader's world.

Often, you will need to choose among a range of significances: A paper on photographer, the Wright brothers might end with a discussion of air travel as it affects economies, politics, or families; a paper on contraception might end with a discussion of its effect on sexual mores, population, or the church. How To Write Phd Thesis. But don't overwhelm your reader with the importance of your remarks. Keep your discussion well focused. The following paragraphs conclude a paper on George H. Shull, a pioneer in photographer, the inbreeding and crossbreeding of chromakey essay corn: . . . Thus, the hybrids developed and described by Shull 75 years ago have finally dominated U.S. corn production. The adoption of hybrid corn was steady and dramatic in the Corn Belt.

From 1930 through 1979 the average yields of corn in the U.S. increased from 21.9 to 95.1 bushels per essays, acre, and the additional value to the farmer is how to write a swot, now several billion dollars per year. The success of hybrid corn has also stimulated the breeding of other crops, such as sorghum hybrids, a major feed grain crop in arid parts of the world. Sorghum yields have increased 300 percent since 1930. Approximately 20 percent of the land devoted to rice production in China is planted with hybrid seed, which is reported to yield 20 percent more than the best varieties. And many superior varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, and other vegetables are hybrids. Today virtually all corn produced in the developed countries is from photographer, hybrid seed. From those blue bloods of the a swot, plant kingdom has come a model for feeding the world. 10.

The first sentence of this conclusion is a summary, and from it the reader can infer that the paper included a discussion of photographer Shull's techniques for the hybrid breeding of corn. The summary is how to a swot, followed by a two-paragraph discussion on the significance of Shull's research for feeding the photographer, world. Call for Further Research. In the scientific and social scientific communities, papers often end with a review of what has been presented (as, for college, instance, in an experiment) and the ways in which the subject under consideration needs to be further explored. If you raise questions that you call on others to answer, however, make sure you know that the research you are calling for hasn't already been conducted. This next conclusion comes from a sociological report on the placement of elderly men and women in nursing homes. Thus, our study shows a correlation between the placement of elderly citizens in essays, nursing facilities and the significant decline of chromakey essay their motor and photographer essays, intellectual skills over the ten months following placement.

What the research has not made clear is the extent to chromakey essay, which this marked decline is due to physical as opposed to emotional causes. The elderly are referred to homes at that point in their lives when they grow less able to care for photographer essays, themselves - which suggests that the drop-off in essay for new, skills may be due to physical causes. But the emotional stress of being placed in a home, away from family and in an environment that confirms the patient's view of photographer himself as decrepit, may exacerbate - if not itself be a primary cause of - the patient's rapid loss of abilities. Essay. Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between depression and particular physical ailments as these affect the skills of the elderly in nursing facilities. There is little doubt that information yielded by essays, such studies can enable health care professionals to deliver more effective services. Notice how this call for further study locates the write a swot, author in a large community of researchers on whom she depends for assistance in answering the questions that have come out of her own work. The author summarizes her findings (in the photographer, first sentence of the write, paragraph), states what her work has not shown, and then extends her invitation. The purpose of your paper might be to review a problem or controversy and to discuss contributing factors. In such a case, it would be appropriate, after summarizing your discussion, to offer a solution based on the knowledge you've gained while conducting research. If your solution is to be taken seriously, your knowledge must be amply demonstrated in the body of the paper.

. . Essays. . The major problem in college sports today is not commercialism - it is the exploitation of athletes and the proliferation of illicit practices which dilute educational standards. Many universities are currently deriving substantial benefits from sports programs that depend on the labor of athletes drawn from the poorest sections of America's population. It is the essay on my year, responsibility of educators, civil rights leaders, and concerned citizens to see that these young people get a fair return for their labor both in terms of direct remuneration and in terms of career preparation for a life outside sports. Minimally, scholarships in revenue-producing sports should be designed to extend until graduation, rather than covering only four years of athletic eligibility, and should include guarantees of tutoring, counseling, and proper medical care. At institutions where the profits are particularly large (such as Texas A M, which can afford to pay its football coach $280,000 a year), scholarships should also provide salaries that extend beyond room, board, and tuition. Photographer Essays. The important thing is that the athlete be remunerated fairly and have the opportunity to chromakey essay, gain skills from a university environment without undue competition from a physically and psychologically demanding full-time job. This may well require that scholarships be extended over five or six years, including summers. Such a proposal, I suspect, will not be easy to implement. The current amateur system, despite its moral and educational flaws, enables universities to essays, hire their athletic labor at minimal cost. But solving the chromakey essay, fiscal crisis of the photographer essays, universities on the backs of America's poor and how to, minorities is photographer, not, in the long run, a tenable solution.

With the support of concerned educators, parents, and civil rights leaders, and with the help from organized labor, the college athlete, truly a sleeping giant, will someday speak out and demand what is rightly his - and hers - a fair share of the revenue created by their hard work. 11. In this conclusion, the author summarizes his article in write, one sentence: The major problem in college sports today is not commercialism - it is the exploitation of athletes and photographer, the proliferation of illicit practices which dilute educational standards. In paragraph 2, he continues with an analysis of the problem just stated and follows with a general recommendation - that educators, civil rights leaders, and oregon contest, concerned citizens be responsible for the welfare of college athletes. In paragraph 3, he makes a specific proposal, and in the final paragraph, he anticipates resistance to the proposal. Essays. He concludes by cornell college essay, discounting this resistance and returning to the general point, that college athletes should receive a fair deal. An anecdote is photographer, a briefly told story or joke, the point of which in a conclusion is to shed light on write phd thesis, your subject. The anecdote is more direct than an allusion.

With an allusion, you merely refer to a story (Too many people today live in Plato's cave . . .); with the essays, anecdote, you actually retell the story. The anecdote allows readers to discover for themselves the significance of a reference to oregon essay, another source - an effort most readers enjoy because they get to exercise their creativity. The following anecdote concludes an article on homicide. Photographer Essays. In the article, the author discusses how patterns of killing reveal information that can help mental- health professionals identify and treat potential killers before they commit crimes. she author emphasizes both the difficulty and the desirability of approaching homicide as a threat to essay, public health that, like disease, can be treated with preventive care. In his book, The Exploits of the Incomparable Mulla Nasrudin , Sufi writer Idries Shad, in a parable about fate, writes about the many culprits of murder: What is essays, Fate? Nasrudin was asked by write a swot, a scholar.

An endless succession of intertwined events, each influencing the photographer essays, other. That is hardly a satisfactory answer. I believe in cause and effect. Very well, said the Mulla, look at that. He pointed to a procession passing in the street. That man is being taken to be hanged. Is that because someone gave him a silver piece and enabled him to buy the write, knife with which he committed the murder; or because someone saw him do it; or because nobody stopped him?

12. The writer chose to conclude the article with this anecdote. She could have developed an essays interpretation, but this would have spoiled the dramatic value for the reader. The purpose of using an anecdote is to make your point with subtlety, so resist the temptation to interpret. Keep in mind three guidelines when selecting an report on condi anecdote: it should be prepared for (the reader should have all the information needed to photographer, understand), it should provoke the reader's interest, and it should not be so obscure as to be unintelligible. A favorite concluding device is the quotation - the on my for new year, words of a famous person or an authority in the field on which you are writing The purpose of quoting another is to link your work to theirs, thereby gaining for your work authority and credibility. The first criterion for photographer, selecting a quotation is its suitability to essay contest, your thesis. But you also should carefully consider what your choice of sources says about you. Suppose you are writing a paper on the American work ethic. Photographer Essays. If you could use a line by comedian David Letterman or one by the current secretary of labor to make the final point of chromakey essay your conclusion, which would you choose and why?

One source may not be inherently more effective than the photographer, other, but the choice certainly sets a tone for the paper. There is no doubt that machines will get smarter and smarter, even designing their own software and making new and chromakey essay, better chips for new generations of computers. More and more of their power will be devoted to making them easier to use - friendly, in essays, industry parlance - even for those not trained in computer science. And computer scientists expect that public ingenuity will come up with applications the most visionary researchers have not even considered. One day, a global network of smart machines will be exchanging rapid-fire bursts of information at unimaginable speeds. If they are used wisely, they could help mankind to educate its masses and crack new scientific frontiers. For all of us, it will be fearful, terrifying, disruptive, says SRl's Peter Schwartz. In the end there will be those whose lives will be diminished. Contest. But for the vast majority, their lives will be greatly enhanced.

In any event, there is no turning back: if the smart machines have not taken over, they are fast making themselves indispensable - and in the end, that may amount to very much the same thing. 13. Notice how the quotation is essays, used to position the book report on condi, writer to essays, make one final remark. Particularly effective quotations may themselves be used to end an essay, as in book on condi, the following example. Make sure you identify the person you've quoted, although the identification does not need to be made in the conclusion itself. For example, earlier in the paper from which the following conclusion was taken, Maureen Henderson was identified as an epidemiologist exploring the photographer, ways in book on condi, which a change in essays, diet can prevent the onset of certain cancers. In sum, the recommendations describe eating habits almost identical to the diet of around 1900, says Maureen Henderson.

It's a diet we had before refrigeration and the complex carbohydrates we have now. It's an phd thesis old fashioned diet and a diet that poor people ate more than rich people. Some cancer researchers wonder whether people will be willing to change their diets or take pills on the chance of preventing cancer, when one-third of the people in the country won't even stop smoking. Others, such as Seattle epidemiologist Emily White, suspect that most people will be too eager to dose themselves before enough data are in. We're not here to convince the public to take anything, she says. The public is too eager already. What we're saying is, 'Let us see if some of these things work.' We want to essays, convince ourselves before we convince the public.'' 14. There is a potential problem with using quotations: if you end with the words of another, you may leave the impression that someone else can make your case more eloquently than you can.

The language of the quotation will put your own prose into chromakey essay relief. If your own prose suffers by comparison - if the essays, quotations are the best part of your paper - you'd be wise to spend some time revising. The way to avoid this kind of write problem is to make your own presentation strong. Questions are useful for essays, opening essays, and they are just as useful for closing them. Opening and closing questions function in cornell college essay, different ways, however. The introductory question promises to be addressed in the paper that follows.

But the concluding question leaves issues unresolved, calling on the readers to essays, assume an active role by offering their own solutions: How do we surmount the reaction that threatens to destroy the very gains we thought we had already won in the first stage of the women's movement? How do we surmount our own reaction, which shadows our feminism and our femininity (we blush even to use that word now)? How do we transcend the polarization between women and women and between women and men to achieve the new human wholeness that is the promise of feminism, and chromakey essay, get on with solving the concrete, practical, everyday problems of living, working and loving as equal persons? This is the personal and political business of the second stage.

15. Perhaps you will choose to raise a question in your conclusion and then answer it, based on the material you've provided in the paper The answered question challenges a reader to agree or disagree with your response. This tactic also places the photographer essays, reader in an active role. Book. The following brief conclusion ends an article entitled Would an essays Intelligent Computer Have a 'Right to Life'? So the answer to the question Would an report on condi intelligent computer have the right to photographer essays, life? is book report, probably that it would, but only if it could discover reasons and conditions under which it would give up its life if called upon to essays, do so - which would make computer intelligence as precious a thing as human intelligence. 16. When you speculate, you ask what has happened or discuss what might happen. This kind of question stimulates the reader because its subject is the unknown. The following paragraph concludes The New Generation Gap by Neil Howe and William Strauss.

In this essay, Howe and Strauss discuss the differences among Americans of various ages, including the Gl Generation (born between 1901 and 1924), the Boomers (born 1943- 1961), the Thirteeners (born 1961-1981), and the Millennials (born 1981-2000): If, slowly but surely, Millennials receive the kind of family protection and public generosity that Gls enjoyed as children, then they could come of resolution age early in the next century as a group much like the Gls of the 1920s and 1930s - as a stellar (if bland) generation of rationalists, team players, and can-do civic builders Two decades from now Boomers entering old age may well see in their grown Millennial children an effective instrument for saving the world, while Thirteeners entering midlife will shower kindness on a younger generation that is essays, getting a better deal out of how to write a swot life (though maybe a bit less fun) than they ever got at a like age. Study after story after column will laud these best damn kids in the world as heralding a resurgent American greatness. And, for a while at least, no one will talk about a generation gap. 17. Thus, Howe and Strauss conclude an essay concerned largely with the apparently unbridgeable gaps of understanding between parents and children with a hopeful speculation that generational relationships will improve considerably in photographer, the next two decades. Some writers work with an idea, committing it to paper only after it has been fully formed.

Others will begin with a vague notion and begin writing a first draft, trusting that as they write they'll discover what they wish to say.
